Chima Iheaturu Receives Rufford Small Grant and IPBES Fellowship Recognition
We’re proud to announce that Chima Iheaturu has been awarded a 1st Rufford Small Grant of £7,000 by the Rufford Foundation to support his conservation project titled:
“Integrating Local Knowledge and Remote Sensing to Conserve Preuss’s Red Colobus in Cross River National Park, Nigeria”
This initiative aims to protect one of Nigeria’s most endangered primates by combining traditional ecological wisdom with cutting-edge geospatial technologies. The project will enhance conservation strategies and empower local communities in safeguarding biodiversity.
In addition to this achievement, Chima has also been selected as a fellow for the IPBES (Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services) assessment on spatial planning and ecological connectivity (https://www.ipbes.net/user/57329). This prestigious fellowship places him among a global network of experts working to integrate biodiversity into land and sea use planning, contributing to the goals of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda.

Chima Iheaturu, a Ph.D. student at the Institute of Geography, recently returned from a 3-month research stay at the University of Washington, funded by “UniBE Short Travel Grants for (Post)Docs.” 🎓✈️
During his stay, Chima immersed himself in research at the Remote Sensing and Geospatial Analysis Laboratory and made significant progress in his field. 🌐💼
From the majestic views of Mount Rainier to the serene landscapes of Orcas Island, Chima also took time to explore the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest. 🏔️🌲
As he returns to Switzerland, Chima reflects on the enriching experiences and connections he made during his time at the University of Washington: “I am filled with gratitude for the relationships I have built and the horizons I have broadened. My heart is full from 3 months of stimulating research and adventures in nature. I will cherish these memories.” 🌍🤝
